STEVENS POINT, Wis. (1/29/05) -- Ashley Howe scored two goals, including the game-winning goal with 1:42 remaining in the third period, as the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point claimed a 4-3 win over Augsburg College in a nonconference women's hockey game Saturday night at the Ice Hawks Arena.
Augsburg tied the game at 3-3 early in the third period on a power-play goal by Corrie Krzyska (Sr., Buffalo, Minn./Fridley HS), but Howe notched her second goal of the game from Tracy Truckey at the 18:18 mark.
Wisconsin-Stevens Point, ranked No. 5 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online Division III national poll, is now 16-2-0 on the season, claiming its fifth victory in a row. Augsburg is now 10-5-2 on the season, dropping just its second game in its last eight and breaking a four-game winning streak.
All three Augsburg goals came on special-team situations, with two power-play goals and a shorthanded goal. On the season, 40.3 percent of Augsburg's 57 goals have come on the power play (18 goals) or shorthanded (five goals). Meanwhile, the Pointers scored their first three goals on Saturday on the power play.
Augsburg opened the scoring on a power-play goal by
Laura Prasek (Sr., Fridley, Minn.), from
Stacy Anderson (So., Lafayette, Calif./Marina HS) and Melynda Kleewein (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS) at the 2:28 mark of the first period. Wisconsin-Stevens Point tied the game at the 14:55 mark, as Jana Jurkovich scored from Lauren Kellin and Chris Hanson.
Ann Ninnemann scored her 10th goal of the season on the power play, from Kim Lunneborg and Liz Goergen, at the 2:44 mark of the second period, putting Wisconsin-Stevens Point up 2-1. But Augsburg's
Jocelyn Cookson (Jr., Edina, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) drew the game even for the Auggies just 12 seconds later, scoring on an unassisted, shorthanded tally.
Howe gave the Pointers the lead at the 14:19 mark of the second period, from Lunneborg and Goergen, on the power play.
Krzyska scored from
Carrie Velenchenko (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) and Lauren Chezick (Sr., Hastings, Minn.) at the 3:09 mark of the third period.
Wisconsin-Stevens Point outshot Augsburg by a 38-15 margin, including a 19-4 edge in the second period and 10-4 edge in the third.
Amanda Bockmann (Fr., Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego HS) made 34 saves for the Auggies, while Amy Statz made 12 saves for the Pointers.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with a two-game series against St. Olaf next weekend. Friday's (2/4) game is at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena, and Saturday's (2/5) game is at 7 p.m. at the Northfield Ice Arena. Wisconsin-Stevens Point faces another MIAC school on Sunday (1/30), hosting Gustavus Adolphus College at 2 p.m.
