Augsburg falls behind early, drops 2-1 decision at Martin Luther.

NEW ULM, Minn. (10/5/05) -- Despite outshooting Martin Luther College by a 23-5 margin in the second half and 30-15 margin in the game, the visiting Augsburg College men's soccer team could not overcome an early deficit and fell 2-1 to the host Knights in a nonconference match Wednesday afternoon at the MLC Soccer Complex.

Martin Luther went ahead with two goals in the first 24 minutes of play to improve to 4-6 overall. Augsburg drops to 4-7-1 overall.

Jake Wagner (Sr., Grafton, Wis.) scored in the 17th minute for the Knights on assists from Philip Kurbis (Fr., Tacoma, Wash.) and Joe Greefkes (So., Jackson, Wis.), and Nick Schmoller (Sr., Watertown, Wis.) scored in the 24th minute on a header off a pass from Kurbis.

Ryley Teske (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Lutheran HS) had the lone Auggie goal, coming off a cross from James See (Fr., Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels HS) in the 68th minute.

Augsburg had 23 shots, including nine on goal, and four corner kicks in the second half, but just one shot got past Martin Luther goalkeeper Ben Pagel (Jr., Moline, Ill.), who ended up with 10 saves in the game.

Aaron Riedel * (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) had six shots to lead Augsburg, while Alec Rabine (So., St. Louis Park, Minn.) had five shots and See had four. Kurbis had six shots for Martin Luther.

Evan Fuhs (Fr., Woodbury, Minn.) made six saves in 69 minutes in goal for the Auggies, with Pascaul Venter (Fr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) playing 21 minutes of relief.

Augsburg returns home to face St. John's in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Saturday (10/8) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field. Martin Luther hosts Crown in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference game on Saturday at 2 p.m.
