Augsburg drops 2-0 decision to St. John's

MINNEAPOLIS (10/8/05) -- Ben Kachan (So., Edina, Minn.) and Chris Schultz (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored goals for St. John's University, while Matt Sundberg (So., Wayzata, Minn.) made three saves in goal to record the shutout, as the Johnnies scored a 3-0 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

Tudor Flintham (Sr., Norwich, England/Hewitt School for Boys) recorded two assists for the Johnnies, now 8-1-1 overall, 4-1-1 in MIAC play. Augsburg is now 4-8-1 overall, 1-3-1 in MIAC play.

Kachan put the Johnnies on the board first in the 33rd minute, slamming the ball in close past Augsburg goalkeeper Pascaul Venter (Fr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS), following a long shot from Flintham. Schultz also scored from Flintham in the 79th minute, playing the ball close against the left corner of the goal.

St. John's outshot Augsburg by an 11-8 margin in the game, with Kachan and Flintham recording two shots each. Aaron Riedel * (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and James See (Fr., Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had two shots each for Augsburg.

Venter made five saves in goal for the Auggies.

With the win, St. John's coach Pat Haws recorded his 299th career victory, just one shy of the 300 mark. Haws is in his 28th season at St. John's and has a 299-111-42 career record.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Tuesday (10/11) at 5 p.m., hosting Concordia-Moorhead as part of a men's and women's soccer doubleheader, with the women's game to follow at 7:30 p.m. St. John's returns to action on Wednesday (10/12) at 7:30 p.m. with a game at Macalester.
