Cody Swanson (Sr., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS) scored two goals and added an assist, and
Aaron Johnson * (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had two assists, leading Augsburg College to a 5-3 victory over Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Swanson scored his first goal of the season late in the first period to give the Auggies a 2-1 lead, then added an unassisted goal midway through the second period, helping Augsburg to improve to 4-1-0 overall, 1-0-0 in MIAC play.
Hamline is now 0-4-1 overall, 0-1-0 in MIAC play. The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (11/19) at 7:15 p.m. at Drake Arena in St. Paul, Minn.
Augsburg took the early lead, as
Kellen Chamblee (Fr., Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville HS) scored his first collegiate goal on assists from
Kevin Skwor (So., Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) and Swanson, at the 9:17 mark of the first period.
Hamline tied the game on Mike Forconi's (Sr., Bovey, Minn./Greenway HS) goal from Shane Wagner (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) and Griffin Kilby (Sr., Rice Lake Township, Minn./Marshall HS) at the 15:25 mark of the first frame, but Swanson gave the Auggies the lead back just 68 seconds later, scoring from
Brett Way (Fr., Grand Ledge, Mich.).
Augsburg scored twice in a 2:02 span midway through the second period to take a 4-1 lead, on a power-play goal from
Critter Nagurski * (Jr., International Falls, Minn.) with assists from Johnson and
Danny Carlson (So., Roseville, Minn.), and on Swanson's unassisted goal at the 10:27 mark.
Hamline narrowed the lead with two goals in a 3:35 span late in the second period. Justin Hanna (Fr., Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) scored an unassisted goal at the 14:23 mark, and Tom Stunyo (Fr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) scored from Joe Long (Fr., Dayton, Minn./Elk River HS) at the 17:58 mark.
But Augsburg expanded the lead at the 6:07 mark of the third period, as
Joe Haehn (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) scored his fifth goal of the season on feeds from Johnson and
Matt Parnell (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.).
Augsburg outshot Hamline by a 32-27 margin. Augsburg goalie
Tony Ciro (Sr., Spring Lake Park, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) made 24 saves, while Hamline goalie Todor Petkov (So., Boucherville, Quebec) made 27 saves.
Augsburg held Hamline to 0-for-7 on the power play, while converting one goal in its five power-play opportunities.
