Women's Basketball 11/26/05 -- Northwestern-Roseville 65, Augsburg 50

ROSEVILLE, Minn. (11/26/05) -- The Northwestern College women's basketball team snapped a two-game skid with a 65-50 nonconference victory at home over Augsburg College on Saturday night. With the win, the Eagles improved to 3-2 overall on the year, while the visiting Auggies dropped their first of the year in falling to 2-1 this season. Northwestern is now 14-12 all-time against Augsburg and 9-4 all-time at home against the Auggies. The Eagles have come out on top in their last 7 head-to-head battles.
Northwestern slowly built a 15-9 lead midway through the first half. The Eagles extended their advantage to 10 points at 22-12 with 4:04 remaining in the half and finished on a 9-5 run to conclude the first half in front by a score of 31-19. Northwestern's largest lead of the first 20 minutes of play was 14 points.
The second half began with a 12-4 Eagle run, as Northwestern opened up a 20-point lead at 43-23 with 16:03 remaining in the non-conference affair. The Eagles held their advantage and lead by as much as 22 points midway through the final half. Augsburg slowly chipped away at the deficit and closed to within 11 points at 52-41 with just over six minutes remaining in the contest. However, that would prove to be the end of the Auggies' comeback attempt, as Northwestern finished the tussle outscoring Augsburg 13-9 in sealing the 65-50 triumph.
Northwestern drastically cut down on its turnovers, setting a new season-low with just 10 miscues. The Eagles connected on 26-of-62 (41.9 percent) from the floor. Augsburg College struggled to find their shooting touch, making only 18-of-58 (25.0 percent) from the floor and 1-of-10 from three-point range. The Auggies owned a 41-32 advantage on the boards.
The Eagles boasted a pair of players with 17 points as Maggie Chandler (Jr., Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS) and Hannah McEvoy (Jr., Wausau, Wis./Wausau West HS) led Northwestern's offensive efforts. Chandler added 8 rebounds and 6 assists, making 7-of-10 shots from the floor. Julie Ross (New Hope, Minn./Cooper HS) continued to look impressive with her all-around game, notching 9 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.
For Augsburg,
Kristina Lurken (So., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) was the lone Auggie to reach double-figures for scoring, putting in 10 points with three rebounds and three assists.
Katie LaGrave (So., Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS) added seven points, eight rebounds, and three assists on the night.
Rosinta Stromquist (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) had eight points and three rebounds.
Brietta Schluender (Fr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) had nine points and five rebounds.
Northwestern will return to the Ericksen Center for its sixth straight home game on Tuesday (11/29) at 5:30 p.m., hosting Viterbo (Wis.). Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (11/30) at 5:45 p.m., hosting St. Olaf at Si Melby Hall. The game is a doubleheader, with the men's game to follow at 8 p.m.
