Augsburg falls 65-47 to St. Olaf in MIAC opener.

MINNEAPOLIS (11/30/05) -- Chad Norberg (So., Northfield, Minn.) scored 14 points and had seven rebounds, while Jon Butala (Jr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) had 14 points and five rebounds, as St. Olaf College cruised to a 65-47 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.

St. Olaf led 22-16 at halftime, then outscored Augsburg by a 27-6 margin over the first eight minutes of the second half to take its biggest lead of the game, 49-22 with 12:55 remaining. The Ole lead did not dip below 16 points the rest of the way.

St. Olaf is now 3-1 overall, 1-0 in MIAC play, while Augsburg is now 1-3 overall, 0-1 in MIAC play.

Bobby Hunter (So., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Oles, while Steve Banick (So., Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul HS) had 10 points, four rebounds and six assists. Jon Bain (Jr., Austin, Minn.) had nine points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals.

The Auggies hit just 20-of-60 (33.3 percent) from the field, including hitting just 23.5 percent (8-of-34) in the first half. Augsburg was just 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) from three-point range and 3-of-10 (30.0 percent) from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, St. Olaf hit 45.0 percent (27-of-60) from the field and outrebounded Augsburg by a 46-36 margin. The Oles also scored 18 points off of 19 Augsburg turnovers, while the Auggies scored 11 points off of 15 St. Olaf turnovers.

Augsburg was led by forward Zeph Jones (Sr., Flint, Mich./Flint Central HS), who collected his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Grant Hemmingsen (Jr., New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View HS) had 13 points and five rebounds, hitting three 3-pointers. Matthew Huttner (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn./Rosemount HS) had six points, five rebounds and two steals.

Both teams return to action on Saturday (11/3), Augsburg hosting St. Mary's at 3:15 p.m. and St. Olaf playing at St. John's at 3 p.m.
