Augsburg opens season with 5-4 victory over Lake Forest (Ill.)!

MINNEAPOLIS (11/4/05) -- Kyle Thompson (Fr., Surrey, B.C./Enver Creek HS) scored a goal and had an assist, and Tony Ciro (Sr., Spring Lake Park, Minn./Hill Murray HS) made 27 saves in goal, as Augsburg College (Minn.) opened its 2005-06 men's hockey season with a 5-4 victory over Lake Forest College (Ill.) in nonconference action on Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Brian Lee (Jr., Toronto, Ontario) scored twice for Lake Forest, now 1-2 overall.

Augsburg scored two power-play goals, including the eventual game-winning goal from Brett Way (Fr., Grand Ledge, Mich.) on his first collegiate tally with 1:21 left in the second period.

Thompson put the Auggies ahead 5-3 just 1:46 into the third period, but Lake Forest cut the lead to one goal with Lee's shorthanded tally -- the second shorthanded goal for the Foresters in the game -- with 49 seconds left in regulation time. But the Foresters could not tie the game with an extra attacker in the final 32 seconds of play.

Tyler Canal (Jr., Thunder Bay, Ontario) opened the scoring for Lake Forest with a shorthanded goal at the 9:19 mark of the first period, but Augsburg tied the game 1:11 later on a power-play goal by Dan Leopold (So., Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS).

Danny Carlson (So., Roseville, Minn.) and Critter Nagurski * (Jr., International Falls, Minn.) had the other Augsburg goals, with Lee and Andrew Ferrier (So., Stratford, Prince Edward Island) scoring for Lake Forest in the second period.

Kellen Chamblee (Fr., Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville HS) and Greg May (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) had two assists each for Augsburg.

Brandon Kohuch (Fr., Windsor, Ontario) made 23 saves in goal for Lake Forest, as the Foresters outshot Augsburg by a 31-28 margin. Lake Forest was 0-for-7 on the power play.

Augsburg returns to action with a nonconference game against St. Norbert (Wis.) on Saturday (11/5) at 5:30 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena. Lake Forest has a game at St. John's on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
