Men's Basketball 12/3/05 -- St. Marys' 61, Augsburg 56

MINNEAPOLIS (12/3/05) -- Brensley Haywood (Jr., Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy HS) scored 22 points, hitting 9-of-10 from the field and 3-of-4 from three-point range, leading St. Mary's University to a 61-56 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
Haywood went 6-for-6 and scored 13 points in the second half, including seven of the Cardinals' last nine points of the game, as St. Mary's outscored Augsburg by a 9-3 margin in the final minute of play. Haywood hit a three-pointer with 53 seconds left, connected on a fast-break layup with 18 seconds left, and converted another layup with 13 seconds left. Two free throws by Fiore Buccieri (So., Riverside, Ill.) completed the scoring for the Cardinals.
Michael Batterman (Jr., Fond du Lac, Wis./Lomion HS) had 10 points for St. Mary's, now 2-2 overall, 1-0 in MIAC play. Augsburg is now 1-4 overall, 0-2 in league play.
An 8-0 run midway through the first half gave the Cardinals a 17-9 lead with 8:05 left in the first half. St. Mary's led 29-22 at halftime and stretched the advantage to 12 points, 38-26, with 15:37 left in the second half.
But Augsburg cut the lead on the strength of a 14-3 run over the next five minutes, as St. Mary's led just 41-40 with 10:11 left.
Zeph Jones (Sr., Flint, Mich./Flint Central HS) had eight of his 13 points in the game for the Auggies during the 14-3 run.
Augsburg eventually took the lead and stretched it to four points, 51-47, with 5:29 left to play. But St. Mary's used the late 9-3 rally to claim the game.
Augsburg was led by
Justin Kozlowski (So., Wausau, Wis./Wausau Newman HS), who had 14 points, four rebounds, six assists and three steals. Matthew Huttner (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn./Rosemount HS) had 11 points, going 5-for-5 from the field. Jones added six rebounds and a block for the Auggies.
Grant Hemmingsen (Jr., New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View HS) had six points and two blocked shots.
St. Mary's received nine points from Jarvier Pitchford (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) and six points apiece from Terrence Smith (Jr., (Broadview, Ill./St. Joe's HS) and Mike Sweeney (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS).
Both teams return to action on Monday (12/5) at 8 p.m. with MIAC games. St. Mary's hosts Macalester in a single game, while Augsburg plays at Bethel as part of a doubleheader, with the women's game at 5:45 p.m.
