St. Mary's uses late run to top Augsburg 65-57

MINNEAPOLIS (12/3/05) -- Calla Swenson (Fr., Blooming Prairie, Minn.) hit four 3-pointers and collected 18 points to go along with four assists, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals, leading St. Mary's University to a 65-57 lead over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.

Swenson scored 13 points and went 3-of-3 from three-point range in the second half, as St. Mary's held off a late Augsburg charge to improve to 2-2 overall, 1-1 in MIAC play. Augsburg is now 3-2 overall, 1-1 in MIAC play.

The Cardinals led 27-21 at halftime, then pulled away to lead by as many as 12 points in the second half. St. Mary's led 43-33 with 8:54 left in the second half, before Augsburg went on a 17-7 run to tie the game at 50-50 with 3:28 left. But St. Mary's pulled away again, using an 11-1 run to take a 61-51 lead with 40 seconds remaining.

Four Cardinals scored in double figures. Jessica Weisbrod (So., Rollingstone, Minn./Winona Cotter HS) had 12 points, six rebounds and four assists, Ashley Luehmann (Sr., Lewiston, Minn./Lewiston-Altura HS) had 10 points, nine rebounds and three assists, and Sarah Murphy (Jr., Belle Plaine, Minn.) came off the bench to score 10 points with five rebounds.

Augsburg was paced by Katie LaGrave (So., Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS), who scored 18 points with four rebounds. Kristina Lurken (So., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) scored 13 points with five rebounds and four assists, and Rachel Cherry (Sr., Rosemount, Minn.) had 12 points, nine rebounds and two steals.

Rosinta Stromquist (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) and Brietta Schluender (Fr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) had six points apiece for Augsburg, with Schluender contributing nine rebounds and Stromquist adding six rebounds and four assists.

Augsburg jumped out to an early 11-4 lead, but the Cardinals used a 9-0 run to take a 13-11 lead with 9:25 left in the first half. There were six lead changes and six ties in the game.

Augsburg has an MIAC doubleheader on Monday (12/5) at Bethel, with the women's game starting at 5:45 p.m. and the men's game starting at 8 p.m. St. Mary's is idle on Monday before returning to action on Wednesday (12/7) with a doubleheader at Concordia-Moorhead, with the women's game at 5:45 p.m. and the men's game at 8 p.m.
