Women's Hockey 12/3/05 -- Augsburg 4, St. Mary's 3 (OT)
BOXSCORE
STORY FROM ST. MARY'S UNIVERSITY SPORTS INFORMATION
WINONA, Minn. (12/3/05) -- Friday evening, St. Mary's University women's hockey coach Terry Mannor felt like his team gave away a conference point when his Cardinals outshot Augsburg 46-20, but came away with a 1-1 tie.
Saturday evening, the Cardinals were once again in the giving mood, this time giving away both Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference points, as Augsburg College, despite being outshot 35-29, knocked off SMU 4-3 in overtime at the SMU Ice Arena. Augsburg is now 2-4-2 overall, 2-0-2 in MIAC play, while St. Mary's drops to 1-5-1 overall, 0-3-1 in MIAC play.
"It's frustrating, it's disappointing ... . We let this weekend get away from us," said Mannor, whose team saw its winless streak climb to six games (0-5-1) with the tie and loss vs. the Auggies. "I think (Friday's) tie really gave Augsburg a lot of confidence. We dominated that game, and yet they were able to escape with a tie.
"(Saturday) we did not play nearly as well as we did on Friday, and Augsburg, on the other hand, played much better," Mannor continued. "We just didn't move our feet, we didn't utilize our teammates as much -- it just wasn't as good an effort."
And it cost them.
After a scoreless first period, Augsburg erupted for three second-period goals, while the Cardinals managed just a Jenn Shire (So., Anaheim Hills, Calif.) tally, as the Auggies took a 3-1 advantage into the locker room after two periods.
Tiffany Magnuson (Fr., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame HS),
Caryn Quist (Fr., St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral HS) and
Calla Lundquist (Sr., Gillette, Wyo./Campbell County HS) scored for the Auggies in the second period.
Laura Langen (So., New Lisbon, Wis./Mauston HS) cut the gap to 3-2 with her second of the season five minutes into the third period, and Amy Madden (Jr., East Grand Rapids, Mich.) got the Cardinals even with less than three minutes remaining in regulation, as she banged in a rebound off a shot from teammate Madeline Loftus (Sr., Parsippany, N.J.).
In overtime, however, it was all Augsburg, as the Auggies got off the period's only two shots -- the second a wrist shot off the stick of
Samantha Farrell (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Tartan HS) that handcuffed SMU goalie Nikki Jung (Jr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) and found its way into the net.
Amanda Bockmann (So., Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego HS) came up with 32 saves for Augsburg -- 77 saves on the weekend. Jung made 25 saves for St. Mary's.
Augsburg returns to MIAC action with a two-game series against St. Olaf. Friday's (12/9) game is at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena, with Saturday's (12/10) game at 7 p.m. at the Northfield (Minn.) Ice Arena. St. Mary's has a two-game series at St. Benedict on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.
