Patrick Fogerty (Fr., Forest Lake, Minn.) and
Colby Nichol (Fr., Grande Prairie, Alberta/Grande Prairie Composite HS) scored third-period goals, rallying Augsburg College to a 4-4 overtime tie with St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Friday night at the Northfield Ice Arena.
Ted Bickel (Sr., Chanhassen, Minn.) scored two first-period goals for the Oles, adding an assist for a three-point night.
Augsburg is now 5-4-2 overall, 2-1-2 in MIAC play, while St. Olaf is now 2-5-2 overall, 1-3-1 in MIAC play. The teams will complete the MIAC series on Saturday (12/10) at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Fogerty scored from
Danny Carlson (So., Roseville, Minn.) and
Danny Clements (So., Grande Prairie, Alberta/Grande Prairie Composite HS) at the 8:35 mark of the third period, followed by Nichol's game-tying goal from
Brett Way (Fr., Grand Ledge, Mich.) at the 12:51 mark.
St. Olaf outshot Augsburg by a 30-26 margin, including a 3-1 advantage in the overtime session.
Tony Ciro (Sr., Spring Lake Park, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) recorded 26 saves for Augsburg, while Dan Kehler (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) made 22 saves for St. Olaf.
Bickel scored two goals in the first 8:11 of play for the Oles, scoring from Mike MacMillian (So., Buffalo, Minn.) and Jeff Budish (So., Edina, Minn.) at the 4:27 mark of the first period, and adding another goal from Andrew Gastineau (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) at the 8:11 mark.
Augsburg cut into the lead just 38 seconds after Bickel's second tally, as
David Clements (So., Grande Prairie, Alberta/Grande Prairie Composite HS) scored from
Critter Nagurski * (Jr., International Falls, Minn.) and
Kyle Thompson (Fr., Surrey, B.C./Enver Creek HS) at the 18:02 mark. But St. Olaf took a 3-1 lead into the locker room after the first period, as Justin Green (So., Shorewood, Minn.) scored from Nick Stalock (Fr., South St. Paul, Minn.) and Ryan Hampson (Fr., Chanhassen, Minn.).
Nagurski scored for Augsburg from
Aaron Johnson * (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and
Dan Leopold (So., Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) on the power play at the 5:08 mark of the second period, but St. Olaf regained a two-goal advantage with Budish's goal at the 19:31 mark from Bickel.
