Women's Hockey 2/4/05 -- St. Olaf 4, Augsburg 1

MINNEAPOLIS (2/4/05) -- Janae Fabini (Fr., Duluth, Minn./Warroad HS) scored two goals and added an assist for a three-point night, leading St. Olaf College to a 4-1 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Fabini scored on a breakaway moments after leaving the penalty box after a power-play ended to open the scoring, then clinched the win with an unassisted goal on a steal and score in front early in the third period. She added an assist on the final goal of the game for the Oles.
St. Olaf improves to 9-5-1 overall and 7-3-1 in MIAC play, leapfrogging over the Auggies into third place in the MIAC standings with 15 conference points. Augsburg is now 10-6-2 overall, 7-4-0 in MIAC play with 14 conference points. The teams complete the key MIAC series on Saturday (2/5) at 7 p.m. at the Northfield Ice Arena.
The Oles scored twice each in the second and third periods in quick fashion. Fabini scored from Heidi Morse (Fr., Morrisville, Pa./Princeton Day HS) at the 3:31 mark of the second period, and Morse followed with a goal from Susannah Brokl (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Breck HS) and Lindsay Boeser (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) just 1:59 later.
Augsburg cut into the lead midway through the second period, as
Stacy Anderson (So., Lafayette, Calif./Marina HS) scored on an end-to-end rush from
Britt Pennington (Jr., St. Cloud, Minn./Tech HS) and Melynda Kleewein (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond HS).
But Fabini struck again for the Oles at the 4:45 mark of the third period with her second goal of the game, and she and Boeser provided the assists for Brokl's goal at the 5:58 mark.
St. Olaf outshot Augsburg by a 33-24 margin. Kelly Rollwagen (Sr., Mendota Heights, Minn./South St. Paul HS) made 23 saves to score the win for the Oles, while
Amanda Bockmann (Fr., Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego HS) made 29 saves for Augsburg.
The Oles were efficient on the penalty kill, keeping Augsburg off the board on 10 power-play opportunities. St. Olaf was 0-for-5 with the player advantage.
