MINNEAPOLIS (2/5/05) -- Kate Bremmer (So., Granite Falls, Minn./Yellow Medicine East HS) scored 15 of her team-high 17 points in the first half, and four College of St. Catherine players scored in double figures, as the Wildcats ran away to an 89-62 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
Sarah Schneider (So., Shakopee, Minn.) claimed a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats, who broke a 10-game losing streak and improved to 5-14 overall, 3-13 in MIAC play.
In dropping to 2-17 overall, 2-14 in MIAC play, Augsburg was paced by forward
Rosinta Stromquist (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS), who scored her second straight double-double with a career-high 24 points and 10 rebounds along with four steals and five blocked shots.
Trailing 4-2 early, the Wildcats outscored the Auggies by a 29-4 margin over a seven-minute span to take a commanding 31-8 lead with 10:06 left in the first half. St. Catherine ended up hitting 41 percent (19-of-46) from the field in the first half, compared to 25 percent (8-of-32) for Augsburg. The Wildcats led 55-30 at halftime, and the visitors extended the lead to as many as 35 points in the second stanza.
St. Catherine ended up hitting nine 3-pointers, compared to just one for Augsburg. The Wildcats also converted 25 Augsburg turnovers into 30 points, compared to just eight points for Augsburg on 11 Wildcat turnovers.
Rachel Berglund (Fr., Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd HS) had 14 points and eight rebounds for St. Catherine, while Shelly Soule (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) had 12 points, six assists and four steals. Natalie Lyzhoft (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) had eight points, four assists and three steals, Michel Weinhagen (So., Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) had eight points and Trisha Johnson (So., Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) had 13 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Stromquist was the lone Auggie to score in double figures.
Kristina Lurken (Fr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had nine points and four rebounds, and
Katie Kelsey (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.) and
Hannah Bratzel (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Christ Household of Faith HS) had eight points each, with Kelsey adding seven rebounds and Bratzel adding six.
Both teams return to MIAC action on Monday (2/7). Augsburg has a 5:30 p.m. home game against Hamline at Si Melby Hall as part of a women's and men's basketball doubleheader. St. Catherine hosts Concordia, also at 5:30 p.m.
