Augsburg falls 3-0 at defending Division III national runner-up California-Santa Cruz in season opener

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (9/1/05) -- Julian Alvarez scored two goals in a five-minue span late in the first half, leading the host University of California-Santa Cruz to a 3-0 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a nonconference men's soccer game Thursday evening.

Stephan Wondolowski scored on a penalty kick in the 28th minute to open the scoring for the Banana Slugs. Alvarez added a goal from Alex Mandel on a give-and-go in the 41st minute, then capped the scoring with an unassisted goal just before halftime.

UCSC outshot Augsburg by a 17-4 margin, and had nine corner kicks to Augsburg's two. Pascaul Venter (Fr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) made five saves in losing effort for the Auggies.

It was the first game of the season for both teams. UCSC is the defending NCAA Division III national runner-up, having finished 22-2 last season. The Banana Slugs entered the season ranked second in the NSCAA/Adidas Division III preseason national poll.

Augsburg closes its season-opening trip to California on Saturday (9/3) at 11 a.m. with a game against Willamette University (Ore.). The game will be played at the University of California-East Bay in Hayward, Calif., a change from previous schedules.
