MINNEAPOLIS (9/1/05) -- Making her first collegiate start in goal,
Maggie DeGroot (Fr., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) made nine saves in goal to record her first collegiate shutout, leading Augsburg College to a 0-0, two-overtime tie with the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a nonconference women's soccer game Thursday night at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
DeGroot made four saves in the two overtime periods, as the Blugolds outshot the Auggies by a 7-5 margin. Meanwhile, Liz Weirick (So., Kenosha, Wis./Tremper HS) made two saves in the first half and Amy Smith (Fr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) made three saves in the second half and overtime for the Blugolds.
It was the first game of the season for both teams.
Wisconsin-Eau Claire dominated the first half, outshooting Augsburg by a 13-2 margin and controlling the possession for most of the period. However, the second half and overtime were much more even, with the Blugolds holding just a 15-12 advantage over the final 65 minutes of play.
Both teams had several opportunities to score, including Augsburg shots that hit the crossbar in the second half and first overtime.
Liz Kooistra (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) and Maria Iaizzo (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) had six shots each for Wisconsin-Eau Claire, with Marcia Foltz (Sr., Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) and Allison Muer (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) adding five shots apiece.
Emily Anderson * (Jr., Hudson, Wis.) and
Felicia Faison (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) had four shots each for Augsburg, with
Aili Brom-Palkowski (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) adding two shots.
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (9/3) at 1 p.m. with a nonconference game at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minn. Wisconsin-Eau Claire returns to action on Sunday (9/4) at 2 p.m., facing Carleton College in Northfield, Minn.
