Andrew Seidel (Fr., Woodbury, Minn.) scored both goals for Augsburg College, including the game-winning goal with 59 seconds left in the second overtime, as Augsburg claimed a 2-1 victory over Carleton College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Seidel scored the game-winning goal in the 109:01 mark, popping a shot past the Carleton goalkeeper off a feed in the box from
Andrew Connor (So., Becket, Mass./North Muskegon (Mich.) HS).
Augsburg is now 3-5-1 overall, extending its unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1), and 1-1-1 in MIAC play. Carleton is now 4-4-0 overall, 0-3-0 in MIAC play.
The game broke a nine-game losing streak for the Auggies against Carleton, dating to the 1996 season. Carleton had outscored Augsburg 26-2 in the previous nine meetings between the two teams before Saturday's Auggie victory. Before Saturday, Augsburg's last win over the Knights came in the 1995 season (1-0).
Carleton took the early lead, as Joe Cooter (Sr., Berkeley, Calif./Head Royce School) fired a shot from the top of the penalty box for an unassisted goal in the sixth minute.
Seidel tied the game for the Auggies in the 56th minute, putting home a one-timer off a feed from
Alec Rabine (So., St. Louis Park, Minn.).
Both teams had 18 shots in the game. Augsburg outshot Carleton 6-5 in the two overtime sessions.
Ross Mattson (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) made 11 saves in goal for Carleton, while
Pascaul Venter (Fr., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) made seven saves for Augsburg.
Seidel had five shots in the game for the Auggies, with
James See (Fr., Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels HS) and
D.J. Wendell (Fr., Princeton, Minn./Charles M. Russell (Mont.) HS) adding three shots.
Carleton's Brian TenHoor (Fr., Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) had five shots, with Thomas Ashton (So., Los Altos, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep HS) adding four shots and Kurt Bunnelle (Sr., Mundelein, Ill.) adding three shots.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Tuesady (9/27), with Carleton playing at St. Thomas at 4 p.m. and Augsburg playing at Macalester at 7:30 p.m.
