Haehn nets hat trick, Johnson has six-point night, Augsburg tops national No. 11 Wisconsin-Superior 7-4!

SUPERIOR, Wis. (1/13/06) -- Joe Haehn (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) netted his second collegiate hat trick with a three-goal, one-assist effort, and teammate Aaron Johnson * (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) recorded a six-point night with two goals and four assists, leading Augsburg College to a 7-4 win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior in a nonconference men's hockey game Friday night at Wisconsin-Superior's Wessman Arena.

Haehn scored twice on the power play and Augsburg used a four-goal third period to pull away, improving to 6-5-3 with the win over Wisconsin-Superior (9-5-2 overall). The Yellowjackets entered the weekend ranked No. 11 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll.

Johnson's six-point effort was the first for an Auggie since Jaro Cesky had a six-point performance (one goal, five assists) in a 7-3 Augsburg win over St. Thomas on Nov. 4, 2000. Augsburg's single-game point record is seven (six goals, one assist), set by Mike Erickson in a 1980 game against Bethel.

Augsburg was outshot by a 42-30 margin, including a 17-12 disadvantage in the third period. However, Augsburg goalie Tony Ciro (Sr., Spring Lake Park, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) came up with 38 saves, including 16 in the third period, to claim the victory. Baron Bradley made 23 saves in a losing effort for Wisconsin-Superior.

Tied 3-3 entering the third period, Augsburg's Danny Carlson (So., Roseville, Minn.) gave the Auggies the advantage with a goal from Johnson and Ben Bradbury (Fr., Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate HS) at the 1:51 mark.

Johnson scored twice in a 2:50 span, with a power-play goal from Critter Nagurski * (Jr., International Falls, Minn) at the 3:18 mark, then followed with a goal at the 6:08 mark from Haehn and Chad Georgell (Jr., North Pole, Alaska/Fairbanks Lathrop HS).

Myles Palliser scored from Dustin Cosgrove and Jay Dardis on the power play at the 7:03 mark for the Yellowjackets, but Haehn completed his hat trick for the Auggies with a power-play goal from Johnson and Nagurski at the 13:16 mark.

Both teams scored three power-play goals in the game, Augsburg going 3-for-5 with the advantage and Wisconsin-Superior going 3-for-6.

Haehn opened the scoring for the Auggies with a power-play goal from Carlson and Johnson at the 14:22 mark of the first period, but Wisconsin-Superior tied the game on the power play, wtih a goal from Nate Rein on an assist from Jeff Herman at the 19:18 mark.

Kellen Chamblee (Fr., Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville HS) put the Auggies in front with a shorthanded goal from Tom Doyle (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) at the 3:09 mark of the second period.

The Yellowjackets went in front with two goals, an unassisted goal from Pat Power at the 12:05 mark and a power-play goal from Colin Guiguet, on an assist from Cosgrove, at the 18:23 mark.

But Augsburg tied the game on Haehn's second goal of the game, an even-strength goal from Johnson, at the 19:13 mark of the second period.

Augsburg completes its Twin Ports trip on Saturday (1/14) at 7 p.m. with a game at St. Scholastica. Wisconsin-Superior hosts St. John's on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
