Gustavus pulls away in second half to score 59-46 win over Augsburg.

MINNEAPOLIS (1/14/06) -- Jay Stien (Jr., Arlington, Minn./Sibley East HS) had a double-double, with 15 points and 10 rebounds, as his Gustavus Adolphus College men's basketball team rallied from a first-half deficit to score a 59-46 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.

Trailing 22-21 at halftime, Gustavus used a 19-5 run over the first eight minutes of the second half to take a 13-point lead, 40-27. The Gustavus lead dipped below double-digits just once after that, as the Gusties led by as many as 14 points down the stretch.

Gustavus improved to 10-3 overall, 5-3 in MIAC play with the victory, while Augsburg lost its third straight game and sixth in its last seven games to fall to 3-10 overall, 2-6 in MIAC play.

Adam TeBrake (Sr., St. Peter, Minn.) and Phil Sowden (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) scored seven points apiece in the second half and nine points apiece in the game, while Trevor Wittwer (So., Redwood Falls, Minn./Redwood Valley HS) came off the bench to score 13 points with seven rebounds and three assists for the Gusties.

Augsburg was led by Grant Hemmingsen (Jr., New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View HS) scored 16 points with eight rebounds to lead Augsburg, while Charlie Scott (Jr., Ely, Minn.) hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points. Tait Thomsen (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) had nine points.

Gustavus hit 46.2 percent (18-of-39) from the field, while Augsburg hit just 31.5 percent (17-of-54). Gustavus outrebounded Augsburg by a 40-27 margin. The Gusties converted 15 second-chance points off of 10 offensive rebounds, while Augsburg had eight second-chance points on its nine offensive rebounds.

Augsburg jumped out to an early advantage, leading 7-2 at the 13:42 mark of the first half and 17-9 at the 6:30 mark. Scott and Hemmingsen had six points each in the early Auggie run. But Gustavus closed the half on a 12-5 run and took the lead for good 30 seconds into the second half.

Both teams return to action on Monday (1/16) at 7:30 p.m., as Augsburg plays at St. John's and Gustavus plays at Macalester.
