St. Scholastica takes 4-0 lead, claims 5-3 win over Augsburg.

DULUTH, Minn. (1/14/06) -- Jake Nelson scored two goals and had an assist for a three-point night, leading the College of St. Scholastica to a 5-3 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a nonconference men's hockey game Saturday night at the Mars Lakeview Arena.

St. Scholastica outshot Augsburg by a 40-36 margin to improve to 11-5-0 overall. Augsburg is now 6-6-3 overall.

St. Scholastica jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Augsburg rallied in the final two periods, behind goals from Cody Swanson (Sr., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS), Danny Carlson (So., Roseville, Minn.) and Brett Way (Fr., Grand Ledge, Mich.).

Shawn Bartlette, Trevor Geiger and Nelson scored goals for the Saints in the first period, with Kyle Luchinski adding a goal in the second period to give the Saints a 4-0 lead. Luchinski added an assist for a two-point night, while Kelly Reynolds and Joey Martini added two assists each for the Saints.

Swanson scored from Tom Doyle (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) at the 8:44 mark of the second period for the Auggies, followed by Carlson's goal on the power play from Aaron Johnson * (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). Nelson put the Saints up 5-2 with a goal at the 2:12 mark of the third period, but Augsburg cut the lead again on Way's goal at the 14:28 mark, on assists from Ian Bing (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn./Farmington HS) and Greg May (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.).

Steve Bounds made 33 saves for St. Scholastica, while David Nash (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) made 35 saves for Augsburg.

Augsburg has a two-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series with Bethel next weekend, with Friday's (1/20) game at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena and Saturday's (1/21) game at 7 p.m. at the Columbia Arena in Fridley. St. Scholastica faces Northland (Wis.) in a nonconference game on Tuesday (1/17) at 7:05 p.m.
