Calla Lundquist (Sr., Gillette, Wyo./Campbell County HS) and
Jenny Schmidt (So., North St. Paul, Minn.) had a goal and an assist apiece, as Augsburg College claimed a series sweep of the College of St. Catherine with a 3-2 victory in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Saturday afternoon at the University of Minnesota's Ridder Arena.
Katie Medd (So., Mankato, Minn./East HS) added the other Auggie goal, her third goal of the weekend series, as Augsburg improved to 6-6-2 overall, 5-1-2 in MIAC play. St. Catherine is now 0-11-0 overall, 0-8-0 in MIAC play.
Augsburg outshot St. Catherine by a 43-29 margin, completing a weekend where the Auggies claimed an 83-45 advantage in shots on goal over the Wildcats.
Lundquist opened the scoring for Augsburg with an unassisted goal at the 10:53 mark of the first period. Angie Johnson (Jr., Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek HS) tied the game for St. Catherine on a goal from Laurel Volenec (Sr., Loyal, Wis.) at the 2:57 mark of the second period, but Augsburg went ahead on Medd's goal from Schmidt and Lundquist at the 6:17 mark.
Schmidt scored from
Jocelyn Cookson (Sr., Edina, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) and
Christina Waller (Fr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) 39 seconds into the third period to give the Auggies the lead to stay. Betsy Ohrt (Fr., Hudson, Wis.) scored for St. Catherine, on an assist from Johnson, as the 8:29 mark to complete the scoring.
Amanda Bockmann (So., Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego HS) made 14 saves for Augsburg, with teammate
Jena Kleis (So., Hastings, Minn.) making 13 saves in relief. Morgan Kane (Sr., Jordan, Minn./Apple Valley HS) made 40 saves for St. Catherine.
Both teams return to MIAC play with series next weekend. Augsburg faces Bethel, with Friday's (1/20) game at 7 p.m. at Columbia Arena in Fridley, Minn., and Saturday's (1/21) game at 2:15 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena. St. Catherine faces St. Thomas, with Friday's game at 6:05 p.m. at Ridder Arena and Saturday's game at 2 p.m. at the St. Thomas Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn.
