St. Thomas completes sweep with 5-1 win over Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS (1/28/06) -- Courtney Sekevitch (So., Mendota Heights, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) scored two goals, and Maureen Hardwick (Sr., Warroad, Minn.) and Allison Turgeon (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had a goal and assist each, leading the University of St. Thomas to a 5-1 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

After giving up the first goal of the game, the Tommies scored five unanswered goals to claim the win and the series sweep, improving to 15-1-0 overall, 10-0-0 in MIAC play. St. Thomas is ranked No. 5 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (www.uscho.com) Division III national poll.

Jocelyn Cookson (Sr., Edina, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) had the lone goal of the game for Augsburg, which lost its fourth straight game to fall to 6-10-2 overall, 5-5-2 in league play. Cookson's goal, a power-play tally, came on assists from Tiffany Magnuson (Fr., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) and Calla Lundquist (Sr., Gillette, Wyo./Campbell County HS) at the 14:59 mark of the first period.

St. Thomas tied the game 39 seconds into the second period, as Tanaya Reitz (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) scored from Turgeon.

The Tommies scored twice in a 13-second span midway through the second period to take the lead for good. Hardwick scored a power-play goal at the 10:52 mark, and Sekevitch followed off the ensuing draw with a goal at the 11:05 mark.

Sekevitch put her second goal on the board 15 seconds into the third period, with a shorthanded goal. Turgeon finished the scoring for the Tommies with a power-play goal at the 13:03 mark of the final frame.

Augsburg outshot St. Thomas by a 29-24 margin, but Tommie goalie Katie Jetland (Jr., Excelsior, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret HS) made 28 saves to score the victory. Augsburg's Jena Kleis (So., Hastings, Minn.) made 14 saves before being relieved by Amanda Bockmann (So., Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego HS) in the third period. Bockmann made five saves.

Augsburg has a nonconference home game against Wisconsin-Stevens Point next Friday (2/3) at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena. St. Thomas faces St. Benedict in an MIAC series next weekend, with Friday's game at 7:30 p.m. in St. Cloud and Saturday's (2/4) game at 2 p.m. at the St. Thomas Arena in Mendota Heights.
