MINNEAPOLIS (10/7/06) -- Dan Hammes (Sr., Sigourney, Iowa) rushed for 104 yards with two touchdowns, leading Wartburg College (Iowa) to a 38-14 victory over host Augsburg College (Minn.) in a nonconference football game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg (0-5 overall) was paced by five catches for 70 yards and a touchdown by tight end
Andrew Neumann (Sr., Somerset, Wis.). He caught a 17-yard scoring pass in the first quarter, tying the game at 7-7.
Wartburg (4-1 overall) led 14-7 at halftime, but used a 17-point third quarter to pull away from the Auggies. As a team, Wartburg accumulated 363 yards of total offense, while limiting the Auggies to 157 yards.
Augsburg quarterback
Jordan Berg (So., Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East HS) completed 13-of-24 passing for 136 yards and a touchdown. Running back
Arthur Minus (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Humboldt HS) rushed for 62 yards on 13 carries.
Wartburg quarterback Dan Bauder (So., Elkader, Iowa/Central HS) threw for 158 yards and a touchdown on 12-of-19 passes. Ryan Hoerner (So., Epworth, Iowa/Western Dubuque HS) caught four passes for 81 yards for the Knights.
Defensively, Augsburg's
Erik Bohnhoff (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) led all players with 13 tackles (six solo), including a tackle for loss and an interception.
Sean Kelly (So., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) and
Mike Matson (Sr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) had 10 tackles apiece.
For Matson, playing for the second straight week with a broken hand suffered in practice last week, the 10-tackle performance marked the 11th straight game (dating to last year) that he has accumulated double-digit tackle figures.
Matt Sodoma (Fr., Randalia, Iowa/Valley Community HS) claimed nine tackles (three solo), with three tackles for loss and two sacks. Jason Lansing (So., West Union, Iowa/North Fayette HS) had six tackles and an interception, and Zach Eggleston (Sr., Van Meter, Iowa) had an interception.
Hammes scored on a three-yard touchdown in the first quarter for the Knights, then rushed for a 16-yard score in the third quarter. He claimed his third straight 100-yard rushing performance with the 104-yard performance. Josh Van Rees (Jr., New Sharon, Iowa/North Mahaska HS) and Alex Boom (Fr., Manchester, Iowa/West Delaware HS) also had rushing touchdowns for the Knights, and Marcus Hemesath (So., Watkins, Iowa/Benton Community HS) caught a touchdown pass from Bauder.
Augsburg's Berg rushed on a one-yard quarterback keeper for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring.
The difference in the game came in the third quarter, when Wartburg held the ball for 12:50 and 22 offensive plays, compared to 2:10 and five offensive plays for Augsburg. Wartburg scored on each of its drives in the third frame.
Both teams return to conference action next Saturday (10/14). Augsburg travels to face St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at 1 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn., while Wartburg hosts Loras at 1:30 p.m. in Waverly, Iowa.
