EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (10/8/06) -- Amy Smith scored the opening goal in the eighth minute, and Emily Meisinger followed with a goal in the59th minute, leading the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire to a 2-0 win over visiting Augsburg College in a nonconference women's soccer game Sunday afternoon at Bollinger Fields.
Augsburg drops to 7-3-2 overall with the loss, giving up just its fifth and sixth goals of the season in 12 games. Augsburg has outscored its opponents by a 20-6 margin this season.
Wisconsin-Eau Claire, now 13-1-0 overall, is ranked No. 8 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III national poll.
Smith scored on a goal in the eighth minute from Shannon Conlin, then assisted on Meisinger's goal in the 59th minute.
"When playing one of the best teams in the nation, you have to capitalize on your opportunities and minimize mistakes," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "Unfortunately, Eau Claire converted on our two mistakes and we were not able to finish our chances."
Goalkeeper
Maggie DeGroot (So., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) made six saves in goal for the Auggies. Liz Weirick and Allie Rivard combined for the shutout for the Blugolds.
Emily Anderson * (Sr., Hudson, Wis.) had two shots for Augsburg, while
Lizzie Broin (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) had three shots. Wisconsin-Eau Claire outshot the Auggies by a 15-7 margin in the game, including a 12-3 advantage in the second half.
"Although it's difficult to lose, this game will make us stronger and we will be more prepared for the difficult conference games that lie ahead," Navarre said.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Tuesday (10/10) at 4 p.m. with a game at Concordia-Moorhead. Wisconsin-Eau Claire returns to action on Saturday (10/14) at 11 :30 a.m. with a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Wisconsin-Platteville.
