Augsburg rallies to tie St. Mary's 3-3 (OT) in series finale.

WINONA, Minn. (11/18/06) -- Chris Johnson (Fr., Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) scored his first collegiate goal and added an assist for a two-point night, and A.J. Hau (Fr., Fort Collins, Colo.) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season to tie the game in the third period, as Augsburg College claimed a 3-3 tie with St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Saturday night at the SMU Ice Arena.

Augsburg (1-4-1 overall, 1-0-1 MIAC) rallied from a 2-0 first-period deficit to claim the tie, taking three of four points in the opening series of the MIAC season for both teams.

David Gross (Jr., Grasston, Minn./Pine City HS), Mike Christensen (Fr., Detroit Lakes, Minn.) and Adam Gill (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) scored goals for St. Mary's (1-4-1 overall, 0-1-1 MIAC).

Gross opened the scoring with a goal from Jesse Polk (Jr., Hastings, Minn.) just 72 seconds into the game, followed at the 8:08 mark by Christensen's goal from Eric Dahl (Fr., St. Cloud, Minn.) and Ben Kenyon (Fr., Sparta, Wis.).

Augsburg cut the lead to one goal at the 12:02 mark, as Chris Johnson scored from Aaron Johnson * (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). Kellen Chamblee (So., Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville HS) tied the game for the Auggies at the 11:07 mark of the second period, scoring from Thomas Erickson (Sr., Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS).

Gill gave the Cardinals the lead 33 seconds into the third period, scoring his fourth goal of the season from Matt Staehely (Fr., Shorewood, Ill.) and Anthony Bohn (Fr., Spring Hill, Fla.). But Augsburg's Hau tied the game at the 2:12 mark, scoring from Chad Georgell * (Sr., North Pole, Alaska/Fairbanks Lathrop HS) and Chris Johnson.

Augsburg claimed a 30-22 shots-on-goal advantage in the contest. Andy Kent (So., Lakeville, Minn.) made 19 saves to score the tie. Dan Smith (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) had 19 saves in 38:16 of work, with Nick Berra (Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) making eight saves in 26:44 of relief.

Augsburg hosts a four-team tournament on Wednesday and Thursday (11/22-23) at the Augsburg Ice Arena, facing Finlandia (Mich.) at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. St. Mary's hosts Northland (Wis.) on Tuesday (11/21) at 7:05 p.m.
