MINNEAPOLIS (11/18/06) -- Melissa Mondo (Sr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) scored two goals and added an assist for a three-point night for St. Mary's University, while
Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) had a goal and an assist for Augsburg College, as the Auggies and Cardinals played to a 3-3 overtime tie in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Mondo scored twice in the first 9:30 of the first period, then added an assist on the eventual game-tying goal in the third frame for the Cardinals, now 1-3-2 overall, 1-0-1 in MIAC play.
Augsburg is now 0-2-2 overall, 0-1-1 in MIAC play.
Mondo's two goals, sandwiched between Magnuson's goal from
Jackie Keller * (Jr., Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS) for the Auggies, gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead after the first period. Mondo's first goal was unassisted, while her second goal was assisted by Laura Mueller (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) and Rebecca Jelenc (Sr., Sheboygan, Wis.).
But the Auggies struck back with two goals in the second period to take the lead.
Andrea Toft (Fr., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored her first collegiate goal, on assists from her twin sister,
Sara Toft (Fr., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS), and
Whitney Restemayer (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.), at the 3:06 mark.
Caryn Quist (So., St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral HS) put in a goal from
Airien Grimstad (Fr., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Magnuson at the 12:47 mark.
However, St. Mary's tied the game 73 seconds later, as Angie Kryzer (Fr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) scored from Mueller and Mondo. Neither team scored in the third period or overtime.
St. Mary's outshot Augsburg by a 38-30 margin.
Toni Menth (Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) claimed 35 saves for the Auggies. Menth has recorded 35 saves or more in each of her four starts as an Auggie. Amanda Gage (Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) had 27 saves for St. Mary's.
Augsburg has a nonconference contest on Tuesday (11/21) at 7:30 p.m., at Wisconsin-Stevens Point. St. Mary's is idle until Dec. 1, when it hosts St. Benedict at 7:05 p.m.
