MINNEAPOLIS (12/1/06) -- Tessa Christensen (So., Albert Lea, Minn.) scored two goals to lead St. Olaf College to a 5-2 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Lindsay Boeser (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) had a goal and assist for the Oles, who improved to 2-2-0 overall, 2-1-0 in MIAC play.
Christina Waller * (So., Cottage Grove, Minn.) had a goal and assist for Augsburg, now 0-4-2 overall, 0-2-1 in MIAC play. It was Waller's first multiple-point game of her collegiate career.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (12/2) at 7 p.m. at the Northfield Ice Arena.
The game was a penalty-filled affair, as St. Olaf was whistled for 12 penalties for 24 minutes, while Augsburg was whistled for 13 penalties for 26 minutes. St. Olaf was 2-for-12 on the power play, while Augsburg was 1-for-11.
Tracy Nolan (Sr., Edinboro, Pa./General McLane HS) opened the scoring for the Oles with a goal from Anna Messerly (So., Vadnais Heights, Minn./Mounds View HS) at the 16:48 mark of the first period.
Augsburg tied the game at the 6:24 mark of the second period, as Waller scored a power-play goal from
Jackie Keller * (Jr., Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS).
St. Olaf took the lead back with Christensen's first goal of the game, from Janae Fabini (Jr., Duluth, Minn./Warroad HS) at the 9:11 mark. But Augsburg tied the game just 61 seconds later, as
Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season from Waller.
St. Olaf closed the scoring with three unanswered goals. The eventual game-winner came on a Kayla Hill (Fr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) power-play goal, assisted by Katie Bennett (Jr., Edina, Minn.), at the 13:16 mark of the second period.
St. Olaf scored in the opening and closing minute of the third period, as Christensen scored from Boeser and Susannah Brokl (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Breck HS) on the power play 35 seconds into the frame, and Boeser scored from Brokl with one second remaining in the game.
St. Olaf outshot Augsburg by a 37-30 margin. Shannon Herrick (So., Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead HS) made 28 saves for St. Olaf, while
Toni Menth (Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) made 32 saves for Augsburg.
