Bethel claims sweep with 1-0 win over Augsburg

FRIDLEY, Minn. (12/9/06) -- Bethany Murphy (So., Grand Rapids, Minn.) scored a power-play goal at the 2:56 mark of the second period, the only goal the Bethel University women's hockey team would need in a 1-0 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday night at the Columbia Arena.

Beth Spurrier (So., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) collected 27 saves in goal for the Royals, who swept the series en route to improving to 5-3-0, 4-2-0 in MIAC play.

Toni Menth (Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) made 16 saves for Augsburg, now 0-6-3 overall, 0-4-2 in MIAC play.

Augsburg outshot Bethel by a 27-17 margin, including an 11-2 advantage in the third period. Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame HS) had eight shots on goal for Augsburg, while Christina Waller * (So., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) had five shots.

Murphy scored a power-play goal from Julien Olson (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./) and Sandra Felten (So., Cashton, Wis.), as the Royals went 1-for-4 on the power play. Augsburg was 0-for-3 on its power-play opportunities.

Both teams are now off for the holiday break. Augsburg returns to action on Jan. 5-6, with a two-game series against Wesleyan (Conn.) at the Augsburg Ice Arena, with the Jan. 5 game at 7:05 p.m. and the Jan. 6 game at 6:05 p.m. Bethel has a nonconference game at Wisconsin-River Falls on Jan. 6 at 2 p.m.
