MINNEAPOLIS (2/1/06) -- Issac Rosefelt (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) had 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, as his University of St. Thomas men's basketball team used a 62.5-percent (25-of-40) shooting effort from the field to claim a 65-44 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.
Joey Shimek (Sr., Prior Lake, Minn.) and Bryan Schnettler (Jr., Sartell, Minn.) had 12 points apiece for the Tommies, who improved to 16-4 overall, 13-2 in MIAC play.
Augsburg was led by
Justin Kozlowski (So., Wausau, Wis./Wausau Newman HS), who had 12 points. Augsburg is now 3-17 overall, 2-13 in MIAC play, dropping its 10th straight game. Augsburg is also winless on its home court this season, falling to 0-9 at Si Melby Hall.
Facing a halfcourt possession offense by Augsburg, the score remained low most of the way, with St. Thomas leading by a 24-14 margin at halftime. Augsburg led just once in the game -- 7-5 at the 10:26 mark of the first half -- and the Tommies used a 14-2 run over the next 5:20 to take a 10-point lead, 19-9 with 4:46 left in the opening stanza.
St. Thomas then hit 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the field in the second half -- including 50 percent (4-of-8) from three-point range -- to expand the lead to as many as 24 points in the second half.
After shooting just 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) from the field in the first half, Augsburg shot 11-of-19 from the field in the second half (57.9 percent). However, Augsburg had 17 turnovers in the game, which St. Thomas converted into 22 points. St. Thomas also dominated inside, with 36 points in the paint compared to Augsburg's 18.
Kevin Keto (Jr., Forest Lake, Minn.) had nine points for the Auggies, while
Charlie Scott (Jr., Ely, Minn.) had seven points and
Dan Graf (Jr., Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) had six points.
Sean Sweeney (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had nine points for the Tommies, while Danny Peterson (Sr., New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) had six points.
St. Thomas returns to MIAC play on Saturday (2/4) with a 3 p.m. game at St. John's. Augsburg returns to action next Monday (2/) with an 8 p.m. game at Hamline.
