Augsburg's Magnuson scores a hat trick, but St. Benedict rallies from 4-1 deficit to claim 4-4 OT tie with Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS (2/11/06) -- Tiffany Magnuson (Fr., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) scored a three-goal hat trick for Augsburg College in the first two periods, but the College of St. Benedict rallied from a 4-1 deficit with three goals in the third period to force overtime, as the teams played to a 4-4 overtime tie in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Saturday afternoon at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Sarah Horlitz (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and Erin Baldwin (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) scored power-play goals for the Blazers in the third period, and Patty King (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) tied the game with a goal with 4:48 remaining in regulation time.

Augsburg is now 7-11-3 overall, 6-5-3 in MIAC play, while St. Benedict snapped a seven-game losing streak in moving to 2-14-3 overall, 2-9-3 in MIAC play.

Magnuson scored twice in the first period and once on a power-play opportunity in the second period to record her second collegiate hat trick, as the Auggies built a 4-1 lead after two periods of play.

Jocelyn Cookson (Sr., Edina, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) had the other Auggie goal in the game, and Brittney LeBlanc (So., Anoka, Minn.) added two assists.

Stephanie Kendrick (Fr., Osceola, Wis./New Richmond HS) scored a power-play goal for the Blazers in the first period. St. Benedict went 3-for-5 on its power-play opportunities in the game, while Augsburg went 1-for-6.

St. Benedict outshot Augsburg by a 41-26 margin, including a 15-10 advantage in the third period and a 5-0 advantage in overtime. Amanda Bockmann (So., Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego HS) made 37 saves for Augsburg, while Sarah Zweber (Fr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) made 22 saves in goal for St. Benedict.

Both teams return to action next Friday (2/17) and Saturday (2/18) with MIAC series, as Augsburg faces Gustavus and St. Benedict faces St. Catherine. Augsburg hosts Gustavus on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena and plays at Gustavus on Saturday at 2 p.m. St. Benedict plays St. Catherine on Friday at 6:05 p.m. at the University of Minnesota's Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, and hosts St. Catherine on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud.
