Augsburg breaks losing streak, tops Gustavus 4-3

MINNEAPOLIS (2/18/06) -- Critter Nagurski * (Jr., International Falls, Minn.) scored two goals and had an assist, and Aaron Johnson * (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had a goal and two assists, as their Augsburg College men's hockey team broke an eight-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over visiting Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Brett Way (Fr., Grand Ledge, Mich.) scored the game-winning goal on a pass from Dan Leopold (So., Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) at the 6:09 mark for the Auggies, who improved to 7-13-3 overall, 3-8-3 in MIAC play.

Sami Idris (So., Gothenburg, Sweden/Bugarden HS) and Mike Hosfield (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had a goal and assist each for Gustavus, now 14-8-1 overall, 9-5-0 in MIAC play. Jon Keseley (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) assisted on all three Gustie goals.

Gustavus took a 2-0 lead into the locker room after the first period, behind a goal from Steven Jensen (Jr., Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood HS) and a power-play marker from Hosfield, but Augsburg scored three straight goals in the second period to take the lead.

Nagurski scored a power-play goal from Danny Carlson (So., Roseville, Minn.) and Johnson 31 seconds into the period, and Johnson notched a power-play goal from Nagurski and Joe Haehn (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) at the 6:22 mark. Nagurski's second goal came from Johnson at the 11:37 mark.

Idris tied the game for the Gusties on a goal from Hosfield and Keseley at the 14:43 mark of the second period, but Augsburg claimed the win on Way's goal in the third.

Augsburg outshot Gustavus by a 32-27 margin. David Nash (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS), making just his fifth appearance in goal on the season, made 24 saves to pick up the win for the Auggies. Erik Kraska (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) took the loss for the Gusties in goal, making 28 saves.

Augsburg finishes its season next weekend with a two-game MIAC series at Concordia-Moorhead. Friday's (2/24) game is at 7 p.m., and Saturday's (2/25) game is at 2 p.m. Gustavus finishes the regular season with a two-game series against St. John's, with Friday's game at 7:05 p.m. at Gustavus and Saturday's game at 2 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn
