Men's Hockey 2/24/06 -- Augsburg 11, Concordia-Moorhead 3

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/24/06) -- Critter Nagurski * (Jr., International Falls, Minn.) claimed a hat trick and a four-point night, with three goals and an assist, as Augsburg College scored its most goals in a single game since the 2001-02 season with an 11-3 win over Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey contest Friday night at the Moorhead Sports Center.

Cody Swanson (Sr., Vermillion, Minn./Hastings HS) scored two goals in the third period, and Aaron Johnson * (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had a goal and three assists, as the Auggies improved to 8-13-3 overall, 4-8-3 in MIAC play. Concordia is now 5-17-2 overall, 0-14-1 in MIAC play.

The teams will complete their seasons with the second game of the series on Saturday (2/25) at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.

Augsburg scored seven consecutive goals in the final 34:36 of the game to cruise to the victory. Augsburg scored its most goals in a single game since an 11-2 win over Northland (Wis.) on Dec. 8, 2001, and its most goals in an MIAC contest since a 13-1 win over Hamline on Feb. 14, 1998.

The Auggies scored twice in the first 2:51 to open the scoring, as Brett Way (Fr., Grand Ledge, Mich.) scored from Tom Doyle (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) and Kellen Chamblee (Fr., Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville HS) scored from Greg May (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) and Dan Leopold (So., Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS).

Concordia tied the game with goals from Mike Vlasak and Cory Johnson, but the Auggies pulled ahead again, as Nagurski scored his first goal of the game from Joe Haehn (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) and Aaron Johnson * with two seconds left in the first period, and David Clements (So., Grande Prairie, Alberta/Grande Prairie Composite HS) scored from Ben Bradbury (Fr., Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate HS) 2:30 into the second period.

Matt Cosmos scored for Concordia at the 4:10 mark of the second period, but Augsburg scored twice in a 1:29 span to take a 6-3 lead, as Nagurski scored from Doyle and Aaron Johnson *, and Danny Clements (So., Grande Prairie, Alberta/Grande Prairie Composite HS) scored from Kyle Thompson (Fr., Surrey, B.C./Enver Creek HS) and Bradbury at the 6:53 mark.

Johnson scored from Nagurski on the power play at the 13:44 mark, and Nagurski completed his hat trick with a goal from Aaron Johnson * and Leopold at the 19:04 mark.

In the third period, Swanson scored twice in a 2:36 span, on assists from Chamblee and Chad Georgell (Jr., North Pole, Alaska/Faribanks Lathrop HS), and Doyle completed the Auggie scoring from Danny Clements and Colby Nichol (Fr., Grande Prairie, Alberta/Grande Prairie Composite HS) at the 12:11 mark.

Augsburg outshot Concordia by a 44-24 margin. David Nash (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) picked up the win in goal for Augsburg, making 21 saves. Jeremy Boniface made 19 saves before being relieved by Mike Dowers, who made 14 saves.
