National No. 6 Wisconsin-Stevens Point scores 3-1 win over Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS (2/3/06) -- Nicole Grossmann (Fr., Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS), Kim Lunneborg (Sr., Richfield, Minn.) and Madison Darud (Fr., Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) scored goals for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, as the Pointers scored a 3-1 win over host Augsburg College in a nonconference women's hockey game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

The Pointers, ranked No. 6 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (www.uscho.com) Division III national poll, improved to 11-4-3 overall, winning their fifth game in a row. Augsburg lost its fifth straight game in falling to 6-11-2 overall.

Wisconsin-Stevens Point outshot Augsburg by a 35-13 mark, including an 18-3 advantage in the first period.

Grossman opened the scoring for the Pointers midway through the first period on a goal from Lauren Kellin (So., Grand Rapids, Minn.).

The Auggies tied the game on Tiffany Magnuson's (Fr., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) team-leading 15th goal of the season, an unassisted tally at the 5:14 mark of the second period.

But Wisconsin-Stevens Point scored twice in the second period to seal the victory. Lunneborg scored from Michelle Sosnowski (Fr., Plainfield, Minn./Central HS) at the 8:52 mark, and Darud finished the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 18:30 mark.

Amanda Bockmann (So., Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego HS) made 32 saves in goal for Augsburg, while Amy Statz (Jr., Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) made 12 saves for Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Wisconsin-Stevens Point returns to nonconference action on Saturday (2/4) with a 6:05 p.m. game against the College of St. Catherine at the University of Minnesota's Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.

Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend with a two-game series against St. Benedict. Next Friday's (2/10) game is at 7 p.m. at the Municipal Athletic Center in St. Cloud, and next Saturday's (2/11) game is at 2:15 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
