Women's Basketball 2/4/06 -- St. Catherine 65, Augsburg 57

ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/1/06) -- Rachel Berglund (So., Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd HS) and Sarah Schneider (Jr., Shakopee, Minn.) scored 21 points apiece, as the College of St. Catherine led from start to finish in a 65-57 win over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Butler Center.
St. Catherine (9-12 overall, 7-9 MIAC) scored the first seven points of the game and eventually built a 22-point first half lead, before Augsburg (5-15 overall, 3-13 MIAC) rallied to cut the lead to eight points in the second half.
Augsburg was paced by
Katie LaGrave (So., Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS), who claimed her first double-double of the season and third of her career with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
Rosinta Stromquist (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) scored 12 points with four blocked shots and four rebounds, and
Alissa Blood (Jr., Mounds View, Minn./Irondale HS) had 10 points.
Berglund hit four three-pointers, scoring 12 points, in the first half to lead the Wildcats to a 37-18 halftime advantage. Schneider had 11 points and six rebounds in the first half.
But Augsburg cut the lead to single-digits in the second half, opening the stanza with a 15-5 run to trail just 42-33 with 16:51 left. LaGrave had seven points in the Auggie run. St. Catherine rallied to re-take a 15-point lead, but Augsburg again cut the lead to eight points, 55-47, with 8:19 left. However, the Auggies could not cut the lead under eight points the rest of the way.
Berglund added five steals and eight rebounds, in addition to her 21 points. Erin Petrich (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) had eight points, six rebounds and three assists for the Wildcats.
St. Catherine outrebounded Augsburg by a 49-39 margin. Augsburg had 23 turnovers, compared to 21 for St. Catherine.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Monday (2/6), with Augsburg playing at Hamline at 5:45 p.m., and St. Catherine playing at Concordia-Moorhead at 5:30 p.m.
