BOXSCORE
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/23/06) -- Claiming its ninth straight shutout this season and 11th dating to last year, the Augsburg College men's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 0-0, two-overtime tie with host Carleton College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon at Bell Field.
In moving to 7-0-2 overall, 1-0-2 in MIAC play, Augsburg is now the only school in NCAA Division III men's soccer to be unbeaten and unscored upon at this point in the season, according to the latest NCAA statistics. The other two schools that were also unbeaten and unscored upon as of Wednesday's games both have fallen from that status; Clark (Mass.) gave up its first goal of the season in a win on Saturday (6-0-1 overall, 11-1 scoring margin), and Ithaca (N.Y.) lost its first game of the season on Friday (4-1-1 overall, 11-1 scoring margin).
Augsburg has outscored its opponents by an 18-0 margin this season. Augsburg's shutout streak has now reached 1,062 minutes -- 11 straight shutouts and 12 minutes of an 12th game dating to last year. Augsburg has not surrendered a goal in 850 minutes played this season.
The Auggies maintained their unscored-upon status, despite being outshot by a 19-10 margin in the game. Carleton outshot Augsburg by an 8-4 margin in the first half, and the Knights had a 6-2 shots edge in the 20 minutes of overtime.
Augsburg goalkeeper Pascaul Venter (So., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) claimed a career-high 13 saves to record his eighth shutout of the season and ninth of his career. Venter has now tied Mark Anderson for the school's single-season shutout record with the eighth shutout. Anderson recorded eight shutouts in 1980, the Auggies' last MIAC title campaign and last winning season (11-1-3 overall, 9-0-3 MIAC). Venter's nine career shutouts are now second all-time in school history; Anderson recorded a school-record 16 shutouts from 1978-80.
Carleton goalkeeper Ross Mattson (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) recorded three saves to also net a shutout, his second of the year.
Alec Rabine (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) had two shots on goal in the game, while Kelsey Duerr (Fr., Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) and D.J. Wendell (So., Princeton, Minn./Charles M. Russell (Mont.) HS) also had two shots for the Auggies.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Sunday (9/24) at 3 p.m. with a key matchup at St. John's in Collegeville, Minn. Carleton returns to action on Wednesday (9/27) at 4 p.m., with a league game against St. Thomas.
