MINNEAPOLIS (1/13/07) -- Chris Berry (Fr., Calgary, Alberta) scored two goals and Chad Beiswenger (So., Moorhead, Minn.) collected 24 saves in goal for his third shutout of the season, as the University of Wisconsin-Superior claimed a 4-0 win over host Augsburg College in a nonconference men's hockey game Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Nate Rein (So., Chaska, Minn.) had a goal and assist, and Braden Desmet (Fr., Strathmore, Alberta) collected two assists for the Yellowjackets, now 13-3-0 overall. Wisconsin-Superior is ranked No. 7 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (www.uscho.com) Division III national poll.
Andy Kent (So., Lakeville, Minn.) had 17 saves in goal for Augsburg, now 5-6-4 overall. The loss broke a six-game Augsburg unbeaten streak (3-0-3).
The Yellowjackets scored three goals in the first period -- two from Berry and one from Corey Stark (Fr., Chanhassen, Minn.) -- and held an 11-6 shots-on-goal advantage after the first 20 minutes of play. Rein scored at the 3:20 mark of the second period to complete the scoring for the Yellowjackets.
Augsburg outshot Wisconsin-Superior by an 18-10 margin over the final two periods, but could not get any shots past Beiswenger, who improved to 10-2-0 in goal this season.
Critter Nagurski * (Sr., International Falls, Minn.) had four shots on goal for the Auggies, while
Shawn Bakke (Sr., New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS),
Chad Georgell * (Sr., North Pole, Alaska/Fairbanks Lathrop HS),
Dan Leopold (Jr., Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) and
Aaron Johnson * (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had three shots each.
Myles Palliser (Sr., Lake Cowichan, British Columbia) had four shots on goal for the Yellowjackets, while Berry and Derek Paige (Jr., Logan Lake, British Columbia) had three shots each. Palliser, Paige and Aaron Berman (So., Surrery, British Columbia) had assists in the game.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend with a two-game series against St. Thomas. Friday's (1/19) game is at 7:05 p.m. at the St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn., and Saturday's (1/20) game is at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Wisconsin-Superior travels to face St. John's in a nonconference game on Sunday (1/14) at 2 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
