Women's Basketball 1/13/07 -- St. Mary's 73, Augsburg 59

WINONA, Minn. (1/13/07) -- Jessica Weisbrod recorded a double-double, with 18 points and 12 rebounds, to go along with four assists and three steals, as her St. Mary's University women's basketball team claimed a 73-59 win over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday afternoon at the SMU Gym.
St. Mary's rallied from a 34-27 halftime deficit, outscoring Augsburg by a 46-25 margin in the second half, to improve to 4-8 overall and 2-7 in MIAC play. Kelly Tanke scored 15 points for the Cardinals, while Stephanie Ayers had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Danielle Dehning scored 11 points with seven rebounds.
"We controlled the tempo the first half of the game, allowing us to take a lead into halftime," said Augsburg coach Jennifer Britz. "We allowed too many second-chance opportunities and points in the paint in the second half. Did not maintain the tempo we wanted to...began to run out of steam."
Augsburg, now 1-11 overall and 1-8 in MIAC play, was paced by
Michelle Richter (So., Chaska, Minn.), who scored 18 points with four rebounds and two steals.
Kristina Lurken * (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) scored 12 points with four rebounds and two steals, and
Brietta Schluender (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored 10 points with six rebounds.
Jacci Mattern (So., Lakeville, Minn.) had seven rebounds, and
Megan Krumrie (So., Elk Mound, Wis.) scored five points with four rebounds.
A 10-1 run gave Augsburg a 10-point lead, 32-22, with 2:59 left in the first half. A 16-8 run to start the second half gave the Cardinals a 43-42 lead with 15:40 left to play, and the Cardinals pulled away to lead by as many as 16 points in the latter stages of the game.
Both teams are in action on Monday (1/15) at 7:45 p.m, with Augsburg hosting Concordia-Moorhead at Si Melby Hall and St. Mary's hosting Bethel.
