Magnuson scores first collegiate hat trick, Medd scores two goals in 11-second span, Augsburg claims 6-1 win over St. Catherine

MINNEAPOLIS (1/13/06) -- Tiffany Magnuson (Fr., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) scored her first collegiate hat trick with a three-goal performance, and teammate Katie Medd (So., Mankato, Minn./East HS) scored two goals in an 11-second span in the third period, leading Augsburg College to a 6-1 victory over the College of St. Catherine in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Augsburg scored four goals in a 2:08 span early in the third period to break open the game, lifting the Auggies to their third win in their last four games, improving to 5-6-2 overall, 4-1-2 in MIAC play. Augsburg outshot St. Catherine (0-10-0 overall, 0-7-0 MIAC) by a 40-16 margin in the game.

Magnuson scored her first goal of the game at the 17:27 mark of the first period, with her third power-play tally of the season, on assists from Jackie Keller * (So., Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS) and Christina Waller * (Fr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS).

St. Catherine tied the game just 1:26 later, as Angie Johnson (Jr., Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek HS) scored from Jordan Nielsen (Fr., Willmar, Minn.). But Augsburg took the lead for good at the 4:50 mark of the second period, as Brittney LeBlanc (So., Anoka, Minn.) scored an unassisted goal.

Medd started the Augsburg third-period outburst with a goal from Jocelyn Cookson (Sr., Edina, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) at the 1:34 mark, then followed after the ensuing face-off with a goal from Samantha Farrell (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Tartan HS) at the 1:45 mark.

Magnuson then completed her hat trick with two goals in a 35-second span, the first on assists from Caryn Quist (Fr., St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral HS) and Keller at the 3:07 mark, and the second on an assist from Katie Johnson (So., Montrose, Minn./Wayzata HS) at the 3:42 mark. Magnuson now has a team-leading 12 goals and 17 points on the season.

Amanda Bockmann (So., Wind Lake, Wis./Muskego HS) made 15 saves for Augsburg, while St. Catherine starter Morgan Kane (Sr., Jordan, Minn./Apple Valley HS) made 26 saves before being relieved in the third period by Jessi McGehee (Fr., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS), who made eight saves.

The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (1/14) at 12:05 p.m. at the University of Minnesota's Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.
