Finlandia (Mich.) gains series split with 5-2 win over Augsburg

HANCOCK, Mich. (1/13/07) -- Sara Sleik had a goal and two assists for a three-point afternoon, leading Finlandia University (Mich.) to a 5-2 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a nonconference women's hockey game on Saturday at the Houghton County Arena.

Jess Olson (Fr., Hamel, Minn./Wayzata HS) had a goal and assist, while Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame HS) had two assists for Augsburg, now 3-7-3 overall.

Chaslyn Duffek, Amy Danielson, Kedra Benson and Jessica Jones had the other goals for Finlandia, now 4-10-2 on the season after the nonconference series split with the Auggies. Danielle Syrowik and Brenda Peterson had two assists each for the Lions.

After a scorless first period, Finlandia scored twice in a 1:45 span early in the second period, but Augsburg cut into the lead with Olson's power-play goal, from Magnuson and Caryn Quist (So., St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral HS) at the 11:59 mark.

Finlandia scored a power-play goal at the 1:30 mark of the third period, but Augsburg trimmed the lead to 4-2 on a power-play goal at the 3:34 mark by Christina Waller * (So., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS), assisted by Olson and Magnuson.

Finlandia scored two more goals to seal the win, including an empty-net goal with 36 seconds left.

Finlandia outshot Augsburg by a 25-24 margin. Toni Menth (Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) collected 20 saves in goal for Augsburg, while Katie Markovich made 22 saves for Finlandia.

Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a series against St. Thomas. Friday's (1/19) game is at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena, while Saturday's (1/20) game is at 7:05 p.m. at the St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn.
