Concordia-Moorhead jumps out to early lead, wins 79-56 over Augsburg.

MINNEAPOLIS (1/15/07) -- Melanie Hageman (Jr., Fargo, N.D./Fargo South HS) had a double-double with 20 points and 10 assists, one of 10 Concordia College-Moorhead players to score in a 79-56 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game Monday night at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.

The Cobbers (9-4 overall, 7-3 MIAC) scored the first 10 points of the game and jumped out to a 20-1 lead in the first 4:45 of play, eventually leading 40-24 at halftime. The Auggies cut the lead to 14 points early in the second half, but Concordia used a 15-4 run to take a 25-piont lead, 57-32 with 13:27 left, and eventually extended the lead to as many as 31 points down the stretch.

Michelle Richter (So., Chaska, Minn.) led Augsburg (1-12 overall, 1-9 MIAC) with 14 points and five rebounds, while Kristina Lurken * (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

"Our athletes continued to work throughout the game," said Augsburg coach Jennifer Britz. "We have to minimize their runs and continue to improve on the fundamental aspects."

Concordia connected on 46.8 percent (29-of-62) from the field, while Augsburg was held to just 31.7 percent (19-of-60) shooting from the field. Concordia outrebounded Augsburg by a 44-39 margin and converted 28 points off of 16 Augsburg turnovers. Augsburg claimed 13 points on 15 Concordia turnovers. Concordia had 34 points in the paint, compared to 24 for Augsburg.

Annie Keeley (Sr., Grafton, N.D.) scored 14 points with six rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Cobbers, and Sara Sorbo (Fr., Adams, N.D./Adams-Edmore HS) had 12 points, with three assists and two steals. Jenna Freudenberg (So., Parkers Prairie, Minn.) scored nine points with three assists.

For Augsburg, Taylor Ray (So., Two Harbors, Minn.) scored nine points with four rebounds, while Jacci Mattern (So., Lakeville, Minn.) had seven points and four rebounds, and Marissa Lindback (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) had six points.

Both teams return to MIAC play on Wednesday (1/17) at 7:45 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Bethel and Concordia hosting St. Mary's.
