Magnuson scores twice, Menth has 34 saves, Augsburg tops St. Thomas 3-2

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. (1/20/07) -- Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame HS) scored two goals, and Toni Menth (Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) collected 34 saves in goal for the victory, as Augsburg College scored a 3-2 victory over the University of St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at the St. Thomas Ice Arena.

Caryn Quist (So., St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral HS) scored the other goal for the Auggies, who claimed a split of the weekend series with the Tommies in improving to 4-8-3 overall, 1-5-2 in MIAC play.

Kara Ledel and Ashley Reinhardt scored goals for St. Thomas, now 8-5-0 overall, 6-2-0 in MIAC play.

St. Thomas outshot Augsburg by a 36-23 margin, including a 12-3 edge in the third period. But Menth stopped 34 shots, including 26-of-27 in the final two periods, to claim the victory, her first career win in conference play. Menth is now 4-7-3 on the season, with a .915 save percentage (fourth-highest among MIAC goalies in overall play and 16th-highest among all NCAA Division III players nationally) and 2.82 goals-against-average.

Quist opened the scoring for the Auggies with an unassisted goal just 1:53 into the game. Ledel tied the game with an unassisted goal at the 9:41 mark of the first period.

Magnuson scored her first goal at the 10:18 mark, on an assist from Jess Olson (Fr., Hamel, Minn./Wayzata HS). Reinhardt tied the game with a goal from Allison Turgeon at the 9:07 mark of the second period, but Augsburg took the lead for good on Magnuson's second goal, a power-play marker from Katie Medd (Jr., Mankato, Minn./East HS) and Jackie Keller * (Jr., Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS) at the 17:37 mark of the second frame.

Magnuson now has a team-high 13 goals, putting her second-highest among MIAC players in overall play and 11th-highest among all NCAA Division III women's hockey players. Her 18 points is tied for ninth-best among MIAC players. The two-goal effort marked her third multi-goal game of the season and 10th of her Auggie career.

Augsburg returns to action next weekend with a two-game series against St. Catherine. Friday's (1/26) game is at 7:05 p.m. at the University of Minnesota's Ridder Arena, while Saturday's (1/27) game is at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena. St. Thomas faces St. Benedict in a weekend series, with Friday's game at 7:30 p.m. in St. Cloud and Saturday's game at 2 p.m. in Mendota Heights.
