MINNEAPOLIS (1/24/07) -- Rachel Berglund (Jr., Dawson, Minn.) scored 17 points to go with seven rebounds, as her College of St. Catherine women's basketball team used a first-half scoring run to seal a 73-50 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.
Ashley Busch (Jr., Fairfax, Minn.) scored 11 points with six rebounds and four assists, and Erin Petrich (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored 10 points with four assists for the Wildcats, now 12-5 overall, 9-5 in MIAC play.
Michelle Richter (So., Chaska, Minn.) had 16 points and eight rebounds, while
Brietta Schluender (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) had 14 points and nine rebounds for Augsburg, now 1-16 overall, 1-13 in MIAC play.
The game was a close one early, with neither team leading by more than five points in the opening 14 minutes of play. But the Wildcats went on a 19-7 run over the final 7:13 of the first half to take a 15-point lead, 40-25, into the locker room. St. Catherine pulled away in the second half to lead by as many as 25 points down the stretch.
Fourteen Wildcats saw playing time in the game, with 11 scoring. Sarah Schneider (Sr., Shakopee, Minn.) had eight points, six rebounds and four steals, while Emily Wigfield (Fr., Maplewood, Minn.) had eight points and two steals.
Megan Krumrie (So., Elk Mound, Wis.) scored nine points with four rebounds and two seals for Augsburg, while
Kristina Lurken * (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) scored seven points with six rebounds, five assists and two steals.
St. Catherine shot 40 percent (28-of-70) from the field, while outrebounding Augsburg by a 45-41 margin. Augsburg shot 32.8 percent (19-of-58) from the field. St. Catherine forced 24 Augsburg turnovers, with 14 steals contributing to 27 points-off-turnovers. Augsburg had eight steals off of 14 St. Catherine turnovers, converting them into 15 points.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Saturday (1/27) at 3 p.m., with Augsburg hosting St. Olaf and St. Catherine playing at Concordia-Moorhead.
