First-period rush leads Augsburg to 3-2 win and series sweep of St. Catherine

MINNEAPOLIS (1/27/07) -- The Augsburg College women's hockey team scored three goals in a 5:28 span of the first period, and goalie Toni Menth (Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) made the lead stand with an 18-save performance, as the Auggies claimed a 3-2 triumph over the College of St. Catherine in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame HS), Sara Toft (Fr., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Christina Waller * (So., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) scored goals for the Auggies, who outshot St. Catherine by a 26-20 margin in claiming the series sweep. After starting the season 0-6-3 in November and December, Augsburg has won six of its eight games in January in improving to 6-8-3 overall, 3-5-2 in MIAC play.

Angie Johnson (Sr., Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek HS) and Sarah Stieve (Jr., Maple Plain, Minn./Orono HS) scored unassisted goals for St. Catherine, now 0-15-1 overall, 0-9-1 in MIAC play. Jessi McGehee (So., Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) had 23 saves in goal for the Wildcats.

Magnuson opened the scoring for the Auggies with her team-leading 15th goal of the season, a power-play marker from Katie Medd (Jr., Mankato, Minn./East HS) at the 12:12 mark. Toft added to the Auggie total just 81 seconds later, scoring from Whitney Restemayer (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.). Waller claimed her third goal of the season on an unassisted tally at the 17:40 mark.

St. Catherine scored goals late in both the first and second periods, as Johnson scored an unassisted tally at the 19:25 mark of the first period, and Stieve scored her goal at the 18:01 mark of the second frame.

Both teams have MIAC series next weekend, as Augsburg faes St. Benedict and St. Catherine faces St. Mary's.
