Macalester holds off Augsburg with 59-53 decision.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/6/07) -- Macalester College picked up its third straight win and moved to 4-5 on the season by defeating the visiting Augsburg College Auggies Saturday 59-53 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball action. The Scots attacked the glass, collecting 20 offensive boards, and out-rebounded their guests 53-43.

Katie LaGrave * (Jr., Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS) knocked down four three-pointers and led all scorers with 20 points to pace Augsburg (1-8 overall, 1-5 MIAC). She was joined in double figures by Megan Krumrie (So., Elk Mound, Wis.) with 12 points and Kristina Lurken * (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS), who finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

The Scots (4-5 overall, 2-4 MIAC) used balanced scoring, getting 13 points from Callie PaStarr (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) and 12 apiece from Trina PaStarr (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) and Danielle Johnson (Fr., DeForest, Wis./Edgewood HS). PaStarr finished with eight rebounds, five on the offensive end, four assists, two blocked shots and a couple steals. Johnson provided four steals and three assists. Macalester's top rebounder was Elise Pagel with a game-high 11 boards.

Macalester outscored Augsburg 24-14 in the paint and 15-4 on second chance points. The Auggies shot 30 (18-of-60) from the field and Mac was at 29 percent (20-of-68).

The Auggies scored the game's first five points, but never led again after the Scots tallied the next 12 to go up 12-5 in the early going. Augsburg knotted things up at 37-37 with 13:15 to play, before the Scots responded with a 13-4 run to go up by nine points at 50-41 with 7:38 left. The guests pulled to within three with 1:12 to play, but Mac iced the game with free throws.

Both teams are back in action on Monday (1/8) at 7:45 p.m. Augsburg travels to face St. Thomas, while Macalester takes on MIAC leader St. Benedict at home.
