ST. PETER, Minn. (10/10/07) –The cold weather did not stop the Gustavus Adolphus College men's soccer team from defeating Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Augsburg College 2-0 on Wednesday in St. Peter.

Sam Barthell scored his first collegiate goal in the first half to give the Gusties a 1-0 halftime lead. Gustavus extended its lead in the second half on a goal by Mike Butterworth. Goalkeeper Trevor Brown posted his eighth shutout of the season in the nets as Gustavus improved to 11-2-1 overall and 6-1-0 in the MIAC. Augsburg falls to 8-5-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the MIAC.

Gustavus got on the scoreboard 18 minutes into the match when Ryan Beduhn placed a corner kick in the penalty box that was headed into the back of the net by Barthell. Nine minutes into the second half, Max Malmquist passed a ball from the right side of the field to the top of the penalty box to find Butterworth open for the header.

"Gustavus did well on their set-piece goal in the fist half," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "I think the game was played at a good level, and we felt good going into the half. We were confident that if we could hold them to one, we would get one back. Unfortunately, Butterworth put an end to that."

The Auggies became the aggressor in the latter stages of the second half, but were unable to score. Augsburg goalkeeper Matt Carlson (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.), returning to the lineup after a four-match absence due to injury, finished the match with five saves and allowed two goals, while Brown made two saves for the Gusties. Gustavus outshot Augsburg by a 13-4 margin, including a 7-1 first-half advantage.

"I thought Matt Carlson did well considering he couldn't kick the ball," Holker said. "His presence in the back made a difference for our team. James See (Jr., Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels HS) looked very good coming off his injury. Matt Bowman (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) and Lucas Ingram (So., Woodbury, Minn.) had good games as well."

Both teams return to MIAC play on Saturday (10/13). Augsburg hosts league-leader Carleton at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field, while Gustavus will travel to Bethel at 1 p.m.
