MINNEAPOLIS (10/13/07) -- Bobby Phillips (Jr., Vadnais Heights, Minn./Mounds View HS) scored a goal and added an assist, leading Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer leader Carleton College to a 2-0 victory over host Augsburg College on Saturday night at Edor Nelson Field.

Phillips scored from Joe Lindner (Jr., Hanover Park, Ill./Glenbard North HS) in the 34th minute, and Brett Adelman (So., Westminster, Colo./Legacy HS) scored from Phillips in the 74th minute for the Knights, now 11-1-2 overall, 7-0-1 in MIAC play. The Knights, ranked No. 20 in the latest National Soccer Coaches of America Division III national poll, extended their unbeaten streak to 12 straight games (10-0-2).

Augsburg (8-6-0 overall, 3-4-0 MIAC) outshot Carleton by a 17-13 margin, including a 12-6 margin in the second half. But Carleton goalkeeper Pete Semmer (Fr., Del Mar, Calif./Bishop's School) recorded six saves to claim his third shutout of the year. Augsburg goalkeeper Matt Carlson (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) claimed four saves in goal.

Kelsey Duerr (So., Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) had four shots, all on net, for Augsburg, while Andrew Connor (Sr., Becket, Mass./North Muskegon (Mich.) HS) and Matt Bowman (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) had three shots apiece.

The Knights' first goal came as a long Lindner pass deflected off a defender and found Phillips in front of the net. In the second half, Phillips served a long pass to a streaking Adelman, who put the shot across the box to the lower left corner of the net.

"Carleton is good. They belong in the top four -- no question about it. We gifted them the first goal with a bit of an error at the back, but they made it happen and they cleaned it up," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "With 20 minutes to go, we knew we needed to push the game and by getting forward, risked the counter-attack goal."

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Tuesday (10/16) at 3:30 p.m., with a conference game at Bethel. Carleton has a nonconference game on Monday (10/15) at 7 p.m. at Luther (Iowa).

"Bethel is a game that this team desperately needs to win; not just to stay mathematically alive in the playoff picture, but to regain the confidence and swagger we once had," Holker said.
