MINNEAPOLIS (10/24/07) -- Nick Manders * (Sr., De Pere, Wis./West De Pere HS) and Alex Hildebrandt (So., St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) scored first-half goals for Augsburg College, leading the Auggies to a 2-1 victory over visiting St. John's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Wednesday night at Edor Nelson Field.
Manders scored on a header off a corner kick by Andrew Seidel (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) in the 16th minute, and Hildebrandt scored off a pass from Kelsey Duerr (So., Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) after a free kick by Lucas Ingram (So., Woodbury, Minn.) in the 24th minute.
"Manders continues to be dominant in the air, especially on attacking set pieces. He is going to be difficult to replace next year," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "Ryley Teske (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Lutheran HS) and Alex Hildebrandt were exceptional on the day. Teske battled through endless challenges, and Hildebrandt played through pain to make a significant difference for our team. Cassidy Duerr (Jr., Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) went 90 minutes for the first time since tearing his ACL, and James See (Jr., Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels HS) was a catalyst in the midfield."
Augsburg is now 10-7-0 overall and 5-4-0 in MIAC play, while St. John's drops to 6-6-2 overall, 4-4-1 in MIAC play.
The Johnnies' lone goal came in the 39th minute, as Tyler Kodet (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) scored on an unassisted blast from 25 yards out.
Matt Carlson (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) claimed the victory in goal for Augsburg with four saves, while Sean Hasselstrom (So., Edina, Minn.) took the loss for the Johnnies, making five saves.
"It's tough not to recognize a lot of players on the day," Holker said. "Andy Seidel and Kelsey Duerr are becoming a very dangerous pair. Matt Carlson was commanding in the box, and finally started to kick the ball 70 yards after his recent injury."
St. John's outshot Augsburg by a 17-14 margin, including a 9-6 edge in the second half. Augsburg had eight corner kicks to five for St. John's.
Jerome D'Alessandro (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) had three shots for the Johnnies, while Manders had four shots for Augsburg and Matt Bowman (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) had three shots.
Both teams complete their seasons on Saturday (10/27) with road contests, as Augsburg plays at Macalester at 7:30 p.m. and St. John's plays at Concordia-Moorhead at 3 p.m.
"Macalester will be an entertaining affair Saturday. Both teams are out of the playoff picture, yet both teams will not give anything less than their best," Holker said.
