ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/27/07) -- Carson Gorecki scored from Dan Balogh in the fifth minute of the second overtime, giving Macalester College a 2-1 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Saturday night at Macalester Stadium, the final game of the season for both teams.

Alex Hildebrandt (So., St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) scored the lone goal for the Auggies on a header from Nick Manders * (Sr., De Pere, Wis./West De Pere HS) in the 60th minute. But Macalester took advantage of an "own goal" in the 69th minute, setting the stage for overtime.

"I thought our guys deserved better. They battled hard, played some decent soccer, and were threatening on multiple occasions. We had some bad fortune on the own goal, but we put ourselves in that position by conceding so many corner kicks," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "This was a heartbreaking result for us, because we felt we were in command of the game. Macalester is always dangerous with Carson up front -- and when you lose him for one second, he makes you pay."

Augsburg (9-9-0 overall, 5-5-0 MIAC) outshot Macalester (8-6-4 overall, 5-4-1 MIAC) by a 14-11 margin, but surrendered seven corner kicks, while taking five. Matt Carlson (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) collected five saves in goal for the Auggies, while Ryan Palmer had six saves for Macalester.

"Ryan Sorensen (So., Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) and James See (Jr., Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels HS) were very good in the middle of the field as the game wore on. David Long (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Holy Angels HS) came in and had his best performance in an Augsburg uniform," Holker said. "The Duerr brothers and the Seidels were all very good, and Manders owned the air as usual. Alex Hildebrandt brought more than just a goal today. His one-vs.-one defending was very strong.

"Our seniors bow out the with the most successful results since the class of 1981 with a record of 35-31-7," Holker added. "They have successfully changed the culture of this program and raised the expectations we all have for each other."
