MINNEAPOLIS (10/3/07) – Andrew Seidel (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) scored on a penalty kick with 4:29 remaining in the second half, giving Augsburg College a 1-0 win over the College of St. Scholastica in a nonconference men's soccer game Wednesday evening at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Augsburg's Kelsey Duerr (So., Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) drew a foul in the penalty box, and Seidel converted the penalty kick with a shot to the lower right corner for his third goal of the season.

"Kelsey Duerr continues to be one of our best players," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "When he moved to center midfield due to more injuries, he broke through the CSS defense and got chopped down for the PK."

Augsburg (7-4-0 overall) broke a two-game losing streak with the victory, while St. Scholastica (9-2-0 overall) saw its eight-game winning streak snapped.

"Collectively, we underperformed in the match, as has been the case in the last two games. I do feel, however, that our training environment has been very good and the guys will work their way out of this little funk," Holker said. "Andrew Connor (Sr., Becket, Mass./North Muskegon (Mich.) HS) and Tyler Seidel (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) were bright spots today. Their work rate was tremendous and they did very well to hold the ball for us. Jake Williams (Fr., Faribault, Minn.) was very steady during his time on the field. I was very pleased with his performance."

After being outshot by a 7-3 margin in the first half, Augsburg turned the tables in the second half, outshooting the Saints by an 11-7 margin in the frame. Augsburg also had four corner kicks to St. Scholastica's two.

In his first action this season in goal, Augsburg goalkeeper Donnie McCarthy (Jr., Whitehall, Mich.) claimed his third collegiate shutout with a four-save effort. Adam Whitehead (Sr., Pickering, Ontario/Notre Dame Catholic Secondary HS) made one save in goal for St. Scholastica.

"Donnie McCarthy did well to stay connected the team in the back, eliminating most of St. Scholastica's chances on the longer ball," Holker said.

Augsburg played 20 players in the nonconference affair, with eight recording shots.

Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition on Saturday (10/6) at 3:30 p.m. with a game at St. Mary's University in Winona. St. Scholastica returns to Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play on Saturday at 12 p.m., hosting Presentation (S.D.).

"St. Mary's is a young team," Holker said. "D'Haiti is an active player and will pose some problems for us. On top of that I liked the way Pascaul's brother and Andy Adair played in the back when I saw them. This should be a good contest."
