MINNEAPOLIS (11/16/07) -- Sam Winsdor (JR, Plymouth, Minn.) and Nick Stalock (JR, South St. Paul, Minn.) had a goal and assist apiece, leading St. Olaf College to a 6-3 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Twelve different Oles figured in the scoring in the conference opener for both teams. St. Olaf is now 2-2-1 overall, while Augsburg is 0-4-1 overall. The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (11/17) at 7:05 p.m. at the Northfield Ice Arena.
St. Olaf scored the first five goals of the game before the Auggies rallied back with three unanswered goals in the third period, with tallies from Ben Roberts (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), Ben Bradbury (JR, Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate HS) and Jim Jensen (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS). But a Stalock goal with 2:05 left to play capped the scoring for the Oles.
With the win, St. Olaf snapped a 13-game winless streak (0-5-8) to the Auggies, dating to the 2000-01 season. The victory also ended one of the most unique streaks in collegiate hockey, as the Auggies and Oles had played to overtime ties in their previous eight consecutive games, dating to the 2003-04 season.
Brett Kistner (SR, Peoria, Ill.) and David Adams (SO, Wychoff, N.J.) opened the scoring for the Oles with first-period goals, with Adams' coming on the power play. Windsor scored at the 7:57 mark of the second period, and Barret Simons (JR, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) and Jeff Budish (SR, Edina, Minn.) scored in the third period, with Budish's goal coming on a shorthanded attack.
Roberts scored from Gerrit Hooker (FY, Dayton, Minn./Osseo HS) at the 5:02 mark of the third period, followed by Bradbury's goal from Brett Way (JR, Grand Ledge, Mich.) at the 12:02 mark and Jensen's goal from Dan Carlson (SR, Roseville, Minn.) and Way at the 15:53 mark.
St. Olaf outshot Augsburg by a 34-31 margin, including a 27-19 advantage through the first two periods. Brycen Eberwein (SO, Grand Forks, N.D.) collected 28 saves for the win for the Oles, while Augsburg's Adam Hendel (JR, Bay City, Wis./Red Wing (Minn.) HS) had 28 saves in a losing effort.
