MINNEAPOLIS (11/20/07) -- Nicole Grossmann (JR, Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) had a goal and assist for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, overcoming a season-best save performance by Augsburg College goalie Toni Menth (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) in a 3-1 decision in a nonconference women's hockey game on Tuesday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Wisconsin-Stevens Point (5-0-0), ranked No. 3 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online Division III national rankings, outshot Augsburg (0-6-0 overall) by a 49-14 margin, but Menth kept the Auggies in the game, recording a season-high 46 saves, just four off her career high.
Jackie Keller * (SR, Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS) scored the lone goal of the game for Augsburg, a power-play goal assisted by Tiffany Magnuson (JR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) with 33 seconds left in the game.
Dana Carothers (FY, Burnsville, Minn.) and Trish Piskula (JR, Antigo, Wis.) also scored for the Pointers, and Michelle Sosnowski (JR., Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central HS) had two assists. Carothers put the Pointers in front with a goal from Grossmann and Sosnowski at the 17:48 mark of the first period, and Piskula scored from Sosnowski at the 1:39 mark of the second frame. Grossmann scored an unassisted goal at the 5:49 mark of the third frame.
Ann Hulme (SO, Shaker Heights, Ohio/Phillips Exeter (N.H.) HS) started in goal for the Pointers and made five saves in the first period, before being relieved by d'Andra Phillips (SO, Swartz Creek, Mich.), who made eight saves in the final two periods.
Magnuson had seven shots on goal for the Auggies, while Jess Olson (SO, Hamel, Minn./Wayzata HS) and Whitney Restemayer (SO, Bemidji, Minn.) had two shots apiece.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play after the Thanksgiving break with a home-and-home series against Bethel on Nov. 30-Dec. 1. Wisconsin-Stevens Point returns to Northern Collegiate Hockey Association play on Nov. 30-Dec. 1 with a home series against Wisconsin-River Falls.
